BUT THE INVISIBLE HAND IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO SORT THESE THINGS OUT

I'm pretty sure that we were going to blow up Russia for about four decades to try and stop this exact kind of thing, right guys?

A mystery! [Sep. 7th, 2008|11:41 am]

[music |Nanou 2-Aphex Twin-Drukqs]

While I'm waiting for the Spore download link from GameTree, I've been investigating this little issue, just 'cause it's a fun opportunity for e-sleuthing. Maybe you can help!

There's this blog called I Miss My Mommy which has all the hallmarks of the usual apolitical troll mischief, making fun of Sarah Palin's son Trig and his Down's Syndrome. I don't much like Palin as a politician and I think she is self-serving (not that it's any of my business) but yeah, making fun of anyone with Down's Syndrome is not cool, and pretty par of the course when it comes to internet humor.

It's this that's got me interested:

"Daily Kos and Democratic Underground have reached a new low. Their latest proud accomplishment is I Miss My Mommy, a website devoted to ridiculing Sarah Palin's son Trig for having Down syndrome."

This quote is courtesy of Vince and Loon, though you'll find almost identical ones in a lot of other blog posts, all of which seem to be pointing their fingers and shouting a loud J'Accuse! at those two left-wing blogs. Needless to say I'm skeptical anyone from either Daily Kos or Democratic Underground are responsible, and I'm looking for proof that might back up such a ridiculous claim. I mean... until I can play Spore. That's more fun.

My hypothesis is that this is all lies, but I'd be a bad skeptic if I didn't at least consider the possibility. If any of you find out anything on this front, I'd be interested in knowing.

EDIT: Spore's downloading!

Cassie

This is our foster kitten Cassie that we’re fostering through Radford Pound Pals. She was born in a cage and has spent her entire eight weeks of life in a cage; like her fellow VT Hokies she has persevered and has really begun to thrive. She has tons of toe floof, is constantly purring, loves dogs (she curls up with our very rambunctious boxer) and even loves belly rubs! She also loves nuzzling into my neck and falling asleep on my shoulder; whoever adopts her will be very lucky indeed… if we can give her up!

Stand-up comedians, they're *kind of* like politicians I guess [Sep. 6th, 2008|10:49 pm]

specific_chris
So this post in an awful community I joined recently led me to think about stand-up comedy.

I've always had a fascination for comedy in general, but ever since seeing Bill Cosby: Himself on VHS in the 80's (so I would have been younger than 8 years old), I have been elated at the idea of stand-up. I don't know why, I think it's because it's main-lining comedy, there are no props, no dialogue, no actors or scenes, just one performer and a microphone and their job is, as George Carlin put it, "thinking up goofy shit, coming around every now and then letting you know what it is, or reminding you of things you already know but forgot to laugh at the first time it happened."

Of course, not every stand-up comedian is funny, but comedy is subjective so it's hard to figure out just who IS funny and who ISN'T funny. I, for instance, think that Carlos Mencia should retire forever or at least start writing his own material and THEN failing.

So I ask you, the friends, who are your favorite comedians and why? Who are the comedians you want to go away and possibly die and why? Do you have beef with stand-up in general and why? Is it at all possible for lesbians to do funny stand-up comedy?

I will do mine later, as I can't seem to get a proper list off the ground quite yet.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg.

This Sarah Palin sounds like a real classy dame!

Cosmin is one year old! [Sep. 6th, 2008|10:17 pm]

[music |Ekaj - Super Metroid Zebes Rising OC ReMix]

Fiddling around some archives I had, I found out and me (ok, [info]bridgeportcat, me and[info]akumyo) sorta came up with Cosmin a year ago. He looked like this:

Some people started to like the idea, so I decided to poke him a bit more. Namely start inking and coloring this guy. Then I touched up a bit on his coloring and appearance. I had a cute character, so I needed someone to compliment him, like a partner of some sort. Him having a love interest would be adorable, and I kinda tinkered with the idea until I realised it would make sense that Cosmin is gay. And his boyfriend being an animal person of the Leather Massage guy.

Noticed my line work was crappy, so I began to work on it, getting better and better.

Somewhere around here I started noticed a whole lot of support for my stuff, and folk doodling him more. I thought for a bit it was kind of a joke and folk were just pepping me up like if I had a deficiency of some sort and couldn't break me the fact that I sucked at doodling.

In my opinion my output started getting somewhat acceptable somewhere here. Figured they should be whimsier and such

Finally started making decent lines, and I figured he should get poofy cheeks (this showcases no significant improvement but I love the pic :) )

At last I developed his anatomy a bit. I improved a lot on this year of doodling

I improved quite a lot on a year, and I hope to improve on my art in the future. I've gathered a lot of support from the places I go to, and I would like to thank everyone who supported or gave advice on how to draw better!

that's kind of a crappy bow, but its a way to say thanks!

Galaga: Destination Earth (GBC, 2000) [Sep. 6th, 2008|03:32 pm]

Warning signs:

1. Port resembles source material the way thalidomide babies resemble Olympic gymnasts

2. Exclusive use of the hilariously shitty "Spider-Man movie / Playstation 3" font

3. Programmer has not only assumed a pseudonym but has chosen a pseudonym well-known for hundreds of years to mean "fuck technology"

In light of this eye-melting color scheme and half-assed execution, yes, perhaps NED LUD ISS RLY NEEET.

* * *

I love Galaga more than most Americans love things like soap and healthy cholesterol levels, so I was more than willing to grade the GBC incarnation on an extremely generous curve: all I wanted was to surrender and then rescue one of my fighters, hear familiar sights and sounds, twang the old reflexes, and most importantly shoot up.

No, this game is terrible. And I have every reason to suspect that the agents who touched the wires to this beast knew it, and just didn't give a single puckered asymmetrical turd as long as Hasbro's checks cleared. So fuck you, Pipe Dream Interactive; if you could have done better, you should have, and if you couldn't, you should have stuck to making shitty original shovelware for $9.99 CD-ROM compilations. And fuck you doubly for giving the finger to every literate player who bought your game in good faith and then, after playing the game and seeing the credits, realized you put this cartridge together with all the enthusiasm of an addict prostitute bombed on Quaaludes, hefting a morbidly obese customer's heaving belly out of the way with one scabby hand and jerking him off with the other while thinking about how Soap Opera Digest and OK! sometimes use the same typefaces.

'Nevermind' album cover interpretation roundup: [Sep. 6th, 2008|10:17 am]

astolpho
55 comments total between livejournal, artspots, furaffinity, and deviantart.

of those:

two (2) people left one-word comments.

one (1) person explicitly stated they did not know it was a reference to anything else at first, and were only able to infer that a reference was being made to something else from the other comments.

three (3) people said it sort of reminded them of an album cover they saw but could not remember the name of the band.

one (1) person wanted to draw my attention to the original album cover, as though I either was not aware of it or they felt I was passing my work off as an original and the source was not given due credit.

four (4) people wanted to draw my attention to the weird al yankovic parody, as though I am not aware of weird al. of those, none of them know that I think weird al is unfunny and lame and that I hate his voice.

two (2) people wanted to draw my attention to David Simpson's interpretation of the album cover.

two (2) people were upset that I did not include a penis in the drawing (with another individual complaining of the same via instant messagenger).

Paper was stationary.
Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading.
Knives were up sharply.
Cows steered into a bull market.
Pencils lost a few points.
Hiking equipment was trailing.
Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline.
Weights were up in heavy trading.
Light switches were off.
Mining equipment hit rock bottom.
Diapers remained unchanged.
Shipping lines stayed at an even keel.
The market for raisins dried up.
Coca Cola fizzled.
Caterpillar stock inched up a bit.
Sun peaked at midday.
Balloon prices were inflated.
Scott Tissue touched a new bottom.
And batteries exploded in an attempt to recharge the market.
